TJY Date: 01/11/21 12:43 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: march_hare GEs have been called "toasters" around here for many years. This appears to be a pop-up model. Wonder what the bread looks like.

The conductor probably forgot to turn his phone off, or maybe the engineer climbed on board without wearing his reflective vest. I'm sure management will find something. Date: 01/11/21 13:55 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: stevelv I know speculation is not always welcome on this board but does anyone care to speculate what would cause an explosion powerful enough to do that much damage?
Date: 01/11/21 14:05 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: sixaxlecentury This one is perplexing to me. The Turbo is intact, the compressor is intact, the only thing in that area is the expansion tank. They would be pretty impressive if that let go with that amount of force though, before something else did. To me it kind of looks like a crankcase explosion on the conductors side, but again, not enough to see.
Hoping somebody gets some better photos of this one.. Date: 01/11/21 14:11 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: billmeeker Former SP 322.
Date: 01/11/21 14:16 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: Switchpoint The turbocharger and aftercoolers are back there, as well as well as the air cleaner boxes. Also the oil filter housing. Air compressor seems to be all there. Hard to say what caused the explosion. Seen quite a few fires, but nothing that severe.

Out Date: 01/11/21 14:34 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: Txtrainman60 Sure would have been interesting seeing a video of that!!!! Although I'm sure there are many that would beg to differ, I've never heard of an OLD U-BOAT doing that much damgage!

to blow the roof off is the Turbocharger! Looks like it experienced a catastrophic failure and sent shrapnel up and back into the ancilliary equipment bay and through the roof! Having a pressurized engine compartment can enhance the force of the explosion, ie all of the hood doors blown open and the section of missing roof sent airborne! Mike Date: 01/11/21 14:55 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: MEKoch With all the stored motive power, UP could not care less. They will simply park it.
Date: 01/11/21 15:05 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: PHall I'm not so sure that ALL of the turbo is there. From what I can see in the first picture the cold side is there but the hot exhaust side seems to be missing.

Date: 01/11/21 15:43 Re: UP engine goes "kablooey" in Utah Author: Switchpoint I remember seeing a picture where a power assembly removed itself from the block, and landed @ 100 ft. from the loco.
