UP Proviso/Global II photos
Author: inCHI

Had a chance to swing by Proviso today to see what PSR is doing, and see what Global II expansion looks like. On that question, others will be best at answering it, as I don't know what it looked like beforehand and if anything has changed.

1. Set of power working Global II
2. Moving back
3. NS power is on the far end of this empty cut.

4. The NS power that was distant in the previous photos.
5. Eastbound stack train went by as I was here.
6. West End, showing that same NS power.

7/8. West end of Global II, moving north.
9. Looking again at the east end, showing about the same area.

Moving on...
10. Power...
11/12. And then a lot more stored power. Mostly SD70's.

13. Stored power again
14. Looking west towards the (not a) hump.
15. Diesel shop

16. Some vintage CR/SOU coil cars without hoods
17/18. A GP60 heads east to go out to the east end of the yard.

19. Looking east, an interesting powerset.
20. I saw 317 a few days pack in the consist of CN's L537 from Kirk to Glenn Yard, where it must have been interchanged to get to UP. Another thread about it:
https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?15,5200001
21. One freight went by on UP while I was walking the bridge. It was really neat to see a string of loaded RBMN hoppers go by with that classic look. Interesting to see a cut heading this far west.

22-24. Back to the UP, looking east - more stored power. One SD60M stuck out amid the SD70's.

Last post.
25. Stack train is pulling out headed west, neat to see all the reefers spotted at the warehouse.
26. Another westbound intermodal at Elmhurst
27. Neat to see trailers in wells.

Just observed that not one person is on the ground in entire yard.  Can't blame em.

Great shots, thanks for braving the weather to provide these. It looks like the "bowl" is intact, save the hump being removed and set up for flat switching. No parking added to that area???  Also looks like the southerly receiving yard has been reduced from 8 tracks to 3; so more ramp tracks are avialable. But overall, trailer/container parking doesn't seem like it was increased, or if so, not much.  That doesn't seem to justify closing Global I from a capacity standpoint, and so that may be the reason for in-gating at Global I, exacerbated by the weather but certainly not the only cause of it. Just my observations from what I can see.

Fantastic set. Would like to see some repeated in the spring without snow for contrast. Thanks for sharing.

Some good coverage here. A few people on the ground and a lot of stored equipment. Still odd to me to hear the words vintage and Conrail together, I guess it is.

Thanks. I do have a set from a year ago. Just realized I posted them 2/22/20. That is bizarre, almost a year to the day without realizing it. But they are snow free and sunlit.

An excellent series providing thorough and well captioned coverage.
QNSL #317 was a very nice surprise.
Thanks for your posting.

What a difference a year makes. No snow and pre COVID-19 shutdown. Love all the panels on flat cars.

I was just looking back at photos I took on 2/22/20 in this thread: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4963481,4963481#msg-4963481

In that, I overlooked this comment that helped explain things:

That makes sense, particularly in that post from a year ago. From what I can find the yard tracks that both posts show east of the diesel shop are called Yard 4. Note how empty all of the tracks are in the 2/22/20 post compared to yesterday. There is a lot more manifest traffic shown now that there was in 2/20; how is their PSR plan going?

Thanks for posting.  Sad to see 2002, one of the Olympic units, in storage.

Here are some drawings of Proviso I copied out of CNW (1992) and UP (2005) track charts - those of individual yard components come from CNW track charts -- the one that contains all the parts is from UP.
