Another Train Accident on a Very Dangerous Stretch
Author: MSE

This time it is a train-pedestrian accident on the BNSF Ark City Sub in southern Wichita - Derby. https://twitter.com/NolanRothKAKE/status/1366233379872595970

The segment of track from Derby to north end Connell has, at least in recent years, had an incredible number of accidents. I think the problem may be that K-15 and the tracks parallel each other in a NNW - SSE direction while the intersecting streets are W-E which creates obtuse angles. I can't think of another reason for all of these.

Think the problem is with those who dont pay attention or dont care just like when they walk across the road looking straight ahead. If I dont look all will be ok.

Florida's Tri-Rail, BrightLine, and Florida East Coast had a huge string of fatals in 2018 and 2019. Sometimes two in a week.  People driving around gates, going under gates, trespassing and so on. Suicides, too.

A huge push to actually ticket the violators broke the surge, and it's been a while since any of these rails had a string of fatals.  Police stopped dozens of people running the gates. This being Florida, they turned up weapons, drugs, warrant violators, etc.  The message got out in the southern counties.

Brightline has not run in about a year too so helps with the reduction in fatilities.

Could also be why there are many train car collisions along Highway 60 west of Phoenix. Glendale I believe. 60 parallels the BNSF in a similar fashion NW-SE.

I spoke too quickly.  A guy in a motorized scooter weaved through stopped traffic in Fort Lauderdale and went around the down gates. A Tri-Rail train took him out.

Although BrightLine / Florida East Coast has quad gates on all public crossings in Broward County, Tri-Rail does not generally have them .
