BNSF derailment near Ashill, CA
Author: Valleyman

Hearing 45 cars of an HKCKBAR on the ground, between Ludlow, CA. and Ash Hill. Not going to be a good day for the BNSF.

10K tons of fun. All those Cryo reefers are usually empty going West.

Thats crazy what a mess, will BNSF reroute some of their traffic out of Barstow in the next few days or can they get around it!

Wide open desert... Bring in the heavy equipment, get the debris off the right of way, lay down some new track and ballast, run trains.

Clean up the debris later.

l'd bet trains will be on the move again within 12-18 hours.

I still standby my 45 cars or more! Today’s ZWSPNBY had the BNSF CEO and the UPS CEO and CFO. Schedule to depart Richmond at 5:30am tomorrow. Should be through Barstow early evening tomorrow. Might be a good time to fly back to Chicago for them.

Sounds encouraging since I was planning on railfanning the new flyover near Crozier Canyon then railfan Kingman Canyon!

Need some clarification: is the ZNBYWSP or ZWSPNBY suppose to have the special guests? We are planning to be up early in the Bay Area to catch the train before all this excitement developed!

Trains detouring?

Is the cause of the derailment known yet?   Track or rolling stock?

Is this the train? Was the lead unit 7384? There was a lot of power on the front end, six or seven units. I followed it out of Needles late morning today (3/3, posting this right after midnight) and took these rushed photos at Hwy 95 RRX late morning. I'm thinking it's likely the same train, there were lots of reefers.

That's the 103 car H-GALBAR9-26A with 5 "DIC" (dead in consist) motors (now parked at West Amboy, CA). It was 4-5 west-bounds behind the now severely derailed 100 car H-KCKBAR1-28A (leader BNSF 7869).

As I type this (at 00:45 PST, on the 4th of March 2021), on BNSF's Needles Subdivision there are 11 west-bounds parked and waiting between Goffs and Ludlow, and 15 east-bounds (majority Z8 and Z9) parked and waiting between Ludlow and Barstow, CA. 24 more west-bounds are on the moving or waiting on BNSF's Seligman Sub east of Needles, CA. 10 more east-bounds moving or waiting on BNSF's Cajon and Mojave Subs.

The clean up and track rebuild surely continues through the night. I'd bet there are numerous light generators and heavy equipment tearing up the Mojave Desert sand at this moment.

After yesterday's fatality, we DOL'ed in the van to Barstow and now I'm just sitting here in the hotel waiting. Nothing moving between Ludlow and Dagget. A bunch of crews were lined up to deadhead home but they yanked all those and are probably saving us for all the dogcatching that is forthcoming. What a mess.
