WP Sleeps in Portola
Author: SCUfoamer

Jon and I were waiting on a crewless coal train in Portola as a chase target back to the bay area. It was 8am and a fresh 2-3 inches of slow blanketed town. I parked the jeep and we killed time snapping shots of the very closed Western Pacific Museum. Oh how tempting it was to hop the fence and snap images of the sleeping giants in the morning snow.

You got some great pictures without jumping the fence.  Really like the first one.

They have care takers who reside in the camp cars. At least they used too.

There are people on the property to protect the collection.  A group of volunteers are quanrantining together to help care for everything.

Yes, the angle and snow make the old 917 look in better condition than she really is.

I discovered the Portola Museum and the wonderful Feather River Canyon about 16 years ago. This was when all the UP stackers ran FRC, and the only regular intermodal train on Donner was the single-stacked ZCSLT which eventually morphed into the ZG2LT. Back then, crew changes were common in Portola, so it didn't take long to find a train out of Portola, east or west.

That 16 years almost feel like eternity. Thank you for the very nice photo essay for allowing me to reminisce.

Amen to that. The UP of 16 years ago and the UP of today bare almost no resemblance to each other, other than say the yellow paint. I think most people on this board can agree on which direction things have trended in those 16 years...

But their masters, the Princes of Wall Street, are happy and with the current "management" they're happy with that.
Never mind that most of their customers would dump them if they could...

Great set of photos.  I never thought the UP of Dick Davidson and the other managers that started out with the MoPac would be better than current management - but I would tend to agree.
