I wonder if UP did sell they would just be able to transfer there track rights in Spokane to the CP. This whole thing seems pretty far fetched.

The only purpose of the old Spokane International for the UP is to connect to the CP.
It's not like there is a ton of traffic originated on the line.

If they only purchased the Eastport-Spokane segment, this would create an interesting competitive lane for CP, with the option to hand off freight to either BNSF or UP at Spokane. 

Doubt anything will happen now that CP is buying KCS.

Yeah, that was somebody's pipe dream scenario anyway as the UP isn't giving CP a profitable line let alone access all of the way to Portland! Highly unrealistic article.

I can guarantee the UP would create a paper barrier that would prohibit the BNSF from getting the trains.

If the traffic is going to BNSF, then CP would prefer to hand it off near Vancouver, BC where they would get a longer haul. So a paper barrier wouldn't bother CP.

CP could probably care less but I bet UP would hence whey they would throw in a paper barrier.
