UP shops at N Little Rock - open or not?
Author: bradleymckay

I've heard conflicting info about the current status of UP's N. Little Rock shops. I'm guessing some employees must have been called back to work based on the number of locomotives in new or recently new paint. Never saw an official statement from UP, the city or the state of Arkansas. Anybody know for sure? TIA

Jenks Shop at North Little Rock is open with a small work force. It may never return to previous levels of staffing. Or so they are saying currently.

Isn't Jenks the only complete repair shop on the UP?

It's the UP's heavy repair facility for locomotives. Other locations such at Ft Worth, TX do locomotive work, but not to the extent that Jenks can. So shutting Jenks down doesn't work real well as a long term plan when you have a fleet of around 8000 locomotives. But PSR plans once again trumped logic and the new plan to "save" money at all costs has been store a whole lot of locomotives (read 3000+), then as working in service locomotives break they raid the deadlines for working replacements. That only works for so long and then margin calls and it's time to pay the man.
