Western Railroad Discussion > UP Passenger Special Plus Black Ponies This Morning

Running from West Colton to Roseville, UP SD70M #4404 [edit] led a 12 car passenger special north on Cajon Pass, reaching Silverwood at about 0745.  (This is the same train that oyw posted a couple days ago as it approached WC going south.)  Typical for this time of year, low clouds and moisture extended from the valley into the Pass as far up as Cozy Dell, but it was clear and sunny beyond.  Bonuses this morning were in the form of brand new (from being re-built) NS AC44C6M #4421 leading an LA-bound stack train, along with another westbound with NS 8109 in consist as the rear DPU.  Thanks also for the heads up(s).

1.  Symbol PWCRV-12 at Silverwood on the Mojave Sub.  Behind 4404 are cars 208, Omaha, Pony Express, Kenefick, 5779 (in flag wrap), Green River, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Pacific Limited, Walter Dean, City of Los Angeles, and Fox River with some of its theater seats occupied.

2.  Prior to shooting the UP special, NS 4421, NS 4051, and BNSF 4004 descended on Main 3 at the site of the old Hwy 138 grade crossing.

3.  BNSF 6568 along with NS 8109 bring up the rear of a loaded ethanol train on Main 2 near the former Davis Ranch.

Since when did UP buy car Pony Express and repaint it?

About the same time 4404 got renumbered 4024....
And as far as I know, which may be very little, the name Pony Express is not trademarked or copyrighted.
UP can do as they wish with it.

They  have had a pony express car before, it was renamed   (now the Lynn Nystrom) and now they have another.  The pony you are thinking of  is for sale is an ex CP car   
  this is a power car, with an attendents room, wonder if it has anything else?

Nice work Gary

There has been a lot of talk even on TO about UP's new Pony Express. It was an RPO and UP has never sold it. It was saved out of MOW service several years ago for another Power car that never happened. It was put together last year as a support car for the traveling Electrician that go out with Passenger moves.

I’ll second that and also add that the “humpback whale” power car’s absence also makes for a cleaner looking consist!
