Good question. Sure doesn't sound like it's working very hard, whether in power or dynamics.

I'm fairly certain they were in power at the time of the video. These units are just quiet compared to other units. It's strange when running them as it gives you no feel for what the locomotive is really doing. I've been on them in run 8 with the window open and they sound like what was heard in the video. I've even gone so far as to open the back door to check out the sound. Then I look down at the computer screen and the locomotive is producing over 100K of tractive effort so obviously it is working.

Sound like a vacuum cleaner. Amazing PROGRESS RAIL has only sold about 120 of them.

152 built if you include EMD/Progress demos and lease fleet units

Really like the sound.  Runs very smooth.
Thanks for the posting.

Sounds less EMD but not quite GE.  Genset on steroids?

To me, itsounds like a super improved ALCO 251 engine.  It has the roar of EMD, but the gutsy talk of ALCO.  GE's sound more raspy-mushy.

SD45X mentioned "1% UPHILL all the way" so I would assume it would NOT be in dynamics.

Yeah but if that’s a BNSF train I would almost be willing to bet my paycheck that it is throttle restricted so maybe only in notch 5 or 6. But it is a foreign motor, so if that engineer is anything like me that notch restriction would be out the window when I first kicked the air off lol

I love the sound of a T4 ACe in the morning...

I would imagine crews like the quiet--a "sane work" environment.  Trackside, it may as well be an overgrown Siemens Charger.  It almost sounds like an electric.  Sometimes progress can be very boring,  but they look cool......

As one who has to run these and other locomotives, I think the much subdued sound is great. Keeping the cab windows open for long periods of time without going deaf is much more important to me than a "cool" sounding locomotive.

But some old hoggers from the 70's have said they loved the deep vibe and roar of those old EMD V-20's!

Dude get over it. These units are a failed design nobody wants them.
