Blue light and loud speakers along the UP
Author: DanCM

One thing I forgot to mention in my post about Moffat Tunnel Sub, there were every so often I passed a pole that has a blue light and loud speakers. I assume these are for security but dont know. Just what is the blue light and speakers for?

Speakers are so the UP can tell you to get away from the portal, they are watching. Blue Light might possibly mean a train is approaching from the tunnel. Ben

These were'nt just at the tunnel. They have them in different places throughout the route

Blue lights or flags are normally used for worker protection.

It is hard to say excactly what you are seeing without pictures, a better description or someone who knows the territory.

In the Columbia River Gorge at the East end of Sandy Siding there is a flashing light and a loudspeaker.  Intended for use by the dispatcher to contack MOW folks who might be working there.  Jeff

UP has them all over the place, at least where there is CTC, to alert MOW workers of approaching trains.

When activated, the blue light flashes and the loud speaker is actually a siren.  There's a on/off switch at each location, usually on the signal house/box.  I don't know how early they come on when the system is active.  I've only seen them working from the cab while passing through control points on trains.

Many in my area seem to have been deactivated.
