Union Pacific's ZG4CI, IG4SI, and IG4SIB at St. Louis
Author: Gerrypaul

I think I know part of the drill on these, but I haven't been in St. Louis in a while and looking for updates:

Used to be a IG4LB that did its change of crews in St. Louis over just east of Grand Avenue, at that signal arm off Edwin St. That was in a 10pm-11pm time and I think 6 days/week (no Monday night, right?).

I think that there is now a "ZG4SI" and "ZG4SIB" to Santa Teresa, NM...with lots on international containers (e.g., K-Line, Triton, Hyundai, NYK Logistics, etc.). These arrive at Edwin St. signal sort of mid-day?  These two trains operate 7 days a week from G4 in Joliet?

Also, a "ZG4CI" arrives at that Edwin St. signal location to switch crews, right? It's daily ( right?) to City of Industry (LA), has a very "domestic" look to it (UMAX, EMP, XPOLogistics, Tiger, C.R. England, etc.), and arrives at Edwin St. in the basic time slot of 10pm-11pm of previous IG4LB. This correct?

I'm grateful to anyone who can fill this out a bit. I figure there are currently at least 3 UP westbound intermodal trains doing a crew-change at the Edwin Signal Arm location most or all 7 days of the week.

Thank You!

As far as I know the ZG4CI still operates via the BNSF transcon.  You can see it daily in the afternoons on the Fort Madison cam.

ZCIG4 is only several times a week now. The other days it's a ICIG4.

ZG4CI still running every day.

You know what? I think you are partly correct. I think Z-G4CI operates on the BNSF as far as Armourdale in KCK. I think that a UP crew picks it up at Armourdale and takes it on its way: Herington--Pratt---Dalhart---Vaughn--Santa Teresa....etc.

Well, a train that looks like ZG4CI came past the Ft Mad cam at 3:40pm today.   According to the last UP train list I saw around July 4th they were running an IG4SI and an IG4SIB through St. Louis, sorta as you say but not calling them Z trains.   But with UP, 25 days is an eternity as to train symbols.

Any clues on when IG4SI and/or IG4SIB typically arrive at St. Louis for the change of crews?

If it is similar to the pattern for the IG4LB from a few years ago, it would arrive in a basic 9pm-1am time. I. think it was daily, x not on Mondays in St. Louis. Now, whenever the time, I guess it's 7days/week.

As of a whopping 3 months ago (likely already changed) UP was moving the following intermodal through St. Louis that was running between Chicago and LA/ El Paso...

IG4SI (daily) - via ex-GM&O through St. Louis then ex-MoPac across MO
IG4SIB (daily) - via ex-GM&O through St. Louis then ex-MoPac across MO
ILBG4 (daily) - via ex-MoPac across MO/through St. Louis then ex-GM&O to G4

In contrast the two Z trains between these same points ran via BNSF transcon between G4 and Kansas City...

ZCIG4 (????) - via BNSF trackage rights through Ft. Madison to G4
ZG4CI (daily) - via BNSF trackage rights through Ft. Madison to Kansas city

Now if the ZCIG4 is no longer a daily train with a portion of the week it demoted to the ICIG4, then the ICIG4 is likely running via St. Louis as well.
