Date: 09/07/21 18:23 Re: Super Duper coal bucket Author: tomstp Just imagine sitting at a crossing waiting for that thing to pass. You could darn near run out of gas. That is 4.35 miles long. Good greif.

Date: 09/07/21 18:37 Re: Super Duper coal bucket Author: HotWater Bob,
When I was on the N&W, as part of the 1962 delivery of GP30 units, they were regularly moving 350 empty hoppers eastbound out of Portsmouth, OH back to Williamson, W Va. The trains generally were dispatched with 3 GP9 units. Rarely were there any problems. When a "new manager" showed up, the empty eastbound trains began to increase in length from 350, to 400, to 425, to 450, to 475. Surprisingly, operations were working smoothly. When the "test train" of 500 empties was dispatched, in the fall of 1962, things suddenly didn't work out so well. Imagine THAT! The N&W returned to 350 empties eastbound to Williamson, W Va,,powered by the usual 3 GP9 units. I never heard what happened to the "new manager". They ran a CWLBT 29 combo of 3 trains on 01-Sep-2021 as a 2+3+3+1 with 0-426-10210-23679’. I’m not sure this is going to be common place, but I can see more of these running between specific locations — namely, in/around Nebraska where empties from various locations converge — and/or when circumstances allow. Good greif. At 10mph it would be nearly half an hour from the time the gates went down until they went up again. I wonder if they use a souped up repeater to keep the end of train DPU in signal range? Posted from Android Date: 09/08/21 06:23 Re: Super Duper coal bucket Author: 57A26 Bob3985 Wrote:

I’m sure the company line will be “All is well, move along, nothing to see here.”

But just think how much you could get done on your smart phone while all those hoppers go past. |
