Western Railroad Discussion > End of the day at Monolith CADate: 09/09/21 20:50 End of the day at Monolith CA Author: AlcoRSD15 Following my post on Monday 9/6, of photos taken at the end of the day at Sandcut CA on August 27, on the next day (8/28) we had the incredible luck of again getting a train during the last 10 minutes of sunlight! Just east of Monolith CA we got this westbound BNSF mixed freight. According to the radio, he had cut off helpers at Cameron before proceeding west towards Tehachapi. This was the first indication of manned helpers on Tehachapi that I have heard about for many years. Maybe someone can enlighten us with more information about this. – Eric Blasko

 Date: 09/09/21 21:28 Re: End of the day at Monolith CA Author: PHall The smartest guys in the room finally "discovered" that running manned helpers just where they're needed, i.e. between Sanborn on the BNSF and Cameron, is cheaper and more efficient then running DPU's all the way between Barstow and Bakersfield.

The trains that are getting the helpers tend to be grain trains headed to the Central Valley. They need help going up the east side of the pass but once they get to Summit they don't need all that power and they don't need much power going back east as they're empty. |
