Big Boy into Hays!

Before we leave Salina to go stake out “9-mile” as I mentioned in the last installment, I thought I’d toss up a couple more images:

51. I’ve seen all kinds of tripods in my time, but never one that conjured up an impression of a spider. I guess that low-level dramatic shot is still in vogue. Tom Thumb might make a handy assistant for this guy...

52. One more try at the shy Mr Sol. He would ultimately disappear behind the clouds until about noon...

Mr “Rathole” & I would caravan our way out to a southward bend in the KP main line just east of a little berg called Carneiro. I was a bit surprised at how the trees have filled in here. When the 4014 passed this spot 2 years ago it was a lot more open. The overcast sky actually prevented us from shooting directly into the sun. But a backlit steam plume might have been interesting...

53. & 54. UP 4014 is turning to climb the grade up “9-mile hill”. Here’s a link to a very similar sequence of the 4014 climbing a much more open 9-mile back in November of 2019: ( Big Boy odyssey (pt #2) (trainorders.com) ). Plus a few other goodies!

55. & 56. A broadside shot & an away shot concludes up our business here. Check out the drone pilot(s) on the ridge above the rear end of the train.

57. Pressing on we bypassed the scheduled stop at Ellsworth and stopped at a very small place called Black Wolf, KS. One of the local guys stood with us to shoot his pics. Before the 4014 arrived he was heard talking into his cell phone: “This place ain’t NEVER seen this many people at one time before!” (although I gotta wonder about the 2019 pass of the 4014 through here... :^)

58. & 59. A vertical, wide angle away shot was followed up with a ‘normal’ lens shot and we got back into a westward direction.

60. & 61. Once again we bypassed the 4014’s short pause at Wilson. I went for shots in Dorrance, KS while ‘Rathole’ was a bit further west. I bumped into an old friend from Hutchinson, KS. We shot some railfan breeze until train time. Then we both got our to & fro shots and quickly said goodbye.

Shot No.54 is wonderful.   It's a standout.

Our chase was winding down, with one more location before reaching the overnight stop at Hays. My sequence at Victoria turned out sorta blasé. Maybe I’ll post a couple of them later on...

62. Upon entering Hays I knew I had plenty of time to make my way up to the 4014. And there was the predictable crowd to go with...

63. Here’s an unexpected bit of elevation. As I drove up my caravan partner “Rathole” was up in a bucket loader for a few shots. He suggested I do the same... and I DID!

64. Later in the afternoon I zoomed in from the Allen St crossing. At 210mm here’s a Photoshop-enhanced shot for all you “chalk-lovers”.

Just a couple more before I go relax in my motel room:

65. Here’s UPP 814, the “Jim Jordan” in full view of parallel 8th St.

66. And here’s a look at the seemingly forgotten rear end of the train...

2 years ago at Carneiro maybe more of the leaves were gone as well?

The trees didn't "fill in."  The last time you were there, or the photo was taken, it was winter time, with no leaves on the tree.

GUYS: I've shot modern day stuff within the past 5 or so years at that same spot. The trees have MOST DEFINITELY FILLED IN a bit...

I've visited some friends who live a few miles down that road in Black Wolf, population 1.  It's really close to the middle of nowhere, lol.

I agree.  54 is so NOT Wyoming. The trees and the composition.  Really nice.
