A little Fall color on Cajon
Author: oyw

With the fall sun angles moving into place, I spent part of the last three weekend mornings on the straight-away just east of Hill 582 (approx. MP58X on the Cajon Sub) watching the rabbit brush bloom along the ROW. Not much in the way of train variety but always a favorite location with many angles to choose from.

1) My first encounter was on October 3 when the flowers started off more green than yellow. With Hill 582 on the left, BNSF 6355 emerges beneath the mountains on Main 2.

2) The nearby hillside provides a down-on view of BNSF 6004 on Main 1.

3) Back on the ground, UP 8827 leads the LA to Denver Z-train.

Now a pair from October 9, not much color change in the vegetation

4) The Loram rail grinder train was a nice surprise as it deadheaded east to Barstow.

5) A ¾ wedgie of BNSF 3857 as it followed the rail grinder on Main 1.

A few more from the next morning (10/10)

6) H2 painted BNSF 4136 leads the ZSBDALT Amazon train early the next morning (10/10). The flowers are slowly starting to change to yellow.

7) Also, BNSF 3721 and 3745 were point helpers on a manifest train.

One more visit last Sunday (10/17)

8) BNSF 4240 has a pair of NS units in consist as the brush continues to turn yellow.

While on the subject of NS, a couple more shots to throw in from 10/9 of NS 1035 and 4064 on a westbound QNYCLAC

9) First, near the Hesperia airport where there was also a little color along the right-of-way.

10) Another shot, coming into Old Keenbrook.

I’ve always enjoyed this time of the season on Cajon, the colorful yellow flowers should soon be in full bloom before turning brown for the rest of winter. I also look forward to the snowcapped mountains but I think that may be a while. Until then, thanks for looking.

That hill beyond 582 has always been one of my favorites to shoot from in early morning. Did they try to sneak any eastbounds by on Track 3? Nice images as always.

Does a BNSF engineer, or pilot, run that rail grinder train on that very busy piece of steep RR????

Brilliant colors and crystal clear blue skies make for perfect shots.  Great work!

I looked at the pics before I looked at who had submitted these and immediately thought "This is Bob's work, guaranteed."  Sure enough...  EXCELLENT pics!  Aren't you glad the NS doesn't get to chose what color BNSF paints their locomotives?
