Richmond Paciifc in Point Richmond
Author: phthithu

Here's an update on Richmond area stuff. Richmond Pacific is still here, and as you can see, they are still getting plenty of cars from the BNSF, requiring them to pull all the way through the tunnel to clear the switch in the yard. Another view shows the BNSF Richmond yard with a former laydown area south of 580, which once had lots of orange stuff in it, now featuring yellow paint for the auto shipper--Honda, I believe it is.

They are still shipping export coal on the Richmond Pacific and here you can see a scene at 34th Street with the RPRC shoving a cut of empties up onto the Stege wye and then down the waterside drill where they make the coal empties unit trains for the UP to pick up and return to the mines. A BNSF light engine move followed the RPRC through Stege, and then got onto the UP and went down to the OIG at the Port of Oakland.

Thanks for the Richmond views.  I was Assistant Superintendent there in 1988-89.  Don't recognize the place but I like the new layout for the auto business since the intermodal operation changed.

Thanks for the pictures. That area is both easy and difficult to catch trains. There is a liquor store at pt richmond that has a wide assortment of hot dogs and sausages.

I like to park up on the hill there's a couple roads you can park and keep an eye on yard and wait for something to happen and be able to drive down to catch them. If you hike up to the top of the hill over the tunnel you can see everything from Chevron's railroad to Giant to Stege even and all of the Richmond Pacific or nearly.

Starbucks shut down their shop.

Didn’t think anything made it through the tunnel anymore, great catch. I like the view of the Richmond yard, I never did go up the hill, missed out on some nice views.

Yeah, and I don't know how often it happens. Its 2500 feet of train to get to the west portal. The tunnel lead from the switch to the end of track is 3200 feet. The RPRC had 54 cars in this shot. So that gives you an idea. All of this info. from one of the RPRC crews.

Great question! Here's a trackmap view with the spots noted. And also a wider regional view.
