Union Pacific under the Big Montana sky
Author: tc

I made a quick trip yesterday to the UP Montana sub and caught the S/B Silver Bow to Pacatello train departing Silver Bow. 1st shot is the train ready to depart southbound. 2nd shot is passing the grain elevator just south of town.

Thanks for posting these as we rarely see photos from this obscure but scenic route!

The line was built as the narrow gauge Utah & Northern by Utah Morman ranchers to connect with the Northern Pacific Railroad at/near Garrison with a short connection to Butte. When the NP arrived at the Little Blackfoot River there was discussion about dual gauging the U&N narrow gauge track to Butte. Both roads agreed to standard gauge track Silver Bow to Garrison for NP trains.

There is a 999 year lease on the UP tracks to the NP still in effect.

The Mormon builders sold their construction to the UP RR.

Don Strack's webpages give a more thorough accounting of the history of the line.

Utahrails.net is the site you want the scroll down to Montana Union.

Thank you for posting the pictures. Very nice. What time did the train depart Silver Bow?

Great photos, Tim.  UP seems out of place in Montana to me, but still very neat.

The northbound leaves Dillon in the morning and arrives at Silver Bow around 10:00. The train works around the junction until about noon when it departs back towards Dillon.  The train lays around Dillon while the local switch engine works industries south of town. Train movements in both directions south of Dillon are after dinner commonly after dark.

The grain elevator which for years had an Alco switcher, good sized train, no recent news of trying
to dump the line, life is good amd nice pictures. Agreed that we see so few pictures of the line North
of Dillon.

The UP Passenger train lasted up to AMtrak or close to it.
