Death of a Tunnel
Author: MacBeau

By the afternoon of November 19, 2007, conditions inside Tunnel 2 on Cajon Pass had forced the decision to daylight it ahead of schedule. Working under flood lights, a sizable collection of yellow iron took to the task. By the morning of the 25th not much remained save the original eastern portal and the extension. Five days into the new year found an eastbound working through the eastern portals in the rain.

Good one, Mac, thanks for posting.  That was the only real glitch in the third main roject.  You have to give BNSF and Ames Construction a lot of credit for how well that whole project went.

Great photos of a super interesting project. It’s been so long now since they finished that I think I’ve seen Cajon more with the 3 track setup for BNSF than I did the old 2 track setup and the tunnel. Seems like a hazy memory now, so I enjoyed the pictures.
