OK... so which is it?
Author: santafe199

I thought that “AOK” is a real railroad. I’m sure it is. Until I see “AOKX” on a car, which USED to mean a private car-owner with no actual trackage, as I understood it. Maybe I have that wrong. Or maybe my camera made a huge typo, one for the record books! This is really earth-shaking, and might even threaten the structural integrity of the entire universe. I sure hope we can get to the bottom of this dilemma. So we can fix the universe. And I can go back to posting my own, normal tpyos... ;^)

1. AOK 202389.

2. AOKX 202665. These 2 hoppers were in Abilene, KS on January 13, 2021.

Thanks for clearing this matter up! :^)

According to Rail Serve, AOK is for Arkansa-Oklahoma RR. The X indicates not a common carrier. Ownership can be private car owners, leasing companies ( maybe the case here) and museums.

AOKX is for a car leasing company owned by the railroad AOK?
I'm sure there is some financial slight of hand going on here.

That was my point. Car not owned by AOK railroad, but non RR subsidiary such as Arkansas-Oklahoma Leasing Co.

Based on info on the net, so a "guess" its one of about 15 cars (2016) thats owned by Greenbrier. I think it was covered in Trains.

In the world of Railroading? That would NEVER happen! :)

According to RailInc (maintainers of the reporting mark registry), AOKX is owned by Greenbrier Management Services, LLC.

I kind of expected the answer to be something like this. Even though the slightly different reporting marks seem like they had to be related because of the obvious visual similarities. Thanks for all the replies...
