Western Railroad Discussion > Night shots at Martinez CA stationDate: 01/09/22 11:03 Night shots at Martinez CA station Author: AlcoRSD15 What to do on a gloomy, drizzly day? Take night shots! Thursday Jan 5 was dark and overcast. I went down to the Martinez (CA) train station to take night shots. Fortunately, the UP local was switching Ozol Yard for about two hours. A couple of times he had a long cut of cars (including 42 coil steel cars) that required pulling down past the Martinez station. He was using four GPs 733-1064-1097-1401. The non-turbo GP38 on the point sounded great. - Eric Blasko

JB - Omaha Date: 01/09/22 20:14 Re: Night shots at Martinez CA station Author: donnerpass I was born (in 1946) and raised in Martinez and every day after school I would walk to the old station where I would hang out until dad picked me up after his workday at Shell Chemical. Lots of memories. An old photo of that station hangs on my bedroom wall. A very large sign on the station advertises $5.77 for a train ticket to Los Angeles. I am hoping to attach a photo I took of the train order office if I can figure out how to do it. The new station is beautiful but I miss the old one.

Larry Date: 01/09/22 21:27 Re: Night shots at Martinez CA station Author: coach Notice in the 1st photo how the new cantilever on the right is already tilting over, badly. When I watching UP install those 2 cantilevers, I wondered why they didn't just put in a bridge all the way across? The gap between the 2 cantilevers isn't much, and a bridge would have prevented the tilting problem they now have.

Yea, coach— they have full modern signal bridges across the tracks at several locations — this one needed one for sure! And Eric, nice photos ! I’m not sure what the crew think of the 733, but I’ve shot it leading the morning LRJ48 with the steel cars on the BNSF for POSCO. The BNSF quite often let’s them on with short windows to get in the clear. Usually it’s a great sound when the UP guys have the two locomotives throttled up trying to get to track speed (about 40). But on the days the 733 was leading they sounded very asthmatic and I’m sure the second unit was doing most of the work.
