Western Railroad Discussion > UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C MoDate: 02/02/22 16:17 UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: tomstp Those who have a cam virtual railfan for this area can watch video at 4: 53 PM and hear the derailment and the train go in emergency. About 6 cars involved. It appears a couple of lumber spine cars may be the cause.
Date: 02/02/22 16:20 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: livesteamer I believe this to be the second such derailment caught on the Sante Fe Jct webcam.

It caught the derailment as it was happening live. at the 4:52 CST mark. Jerry Martin Los Angeles, CA Central Coast Railroad Festival Date: 02/02/22 17:02 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: raildog Just before the derailment became visible there was a loud bang to the left (east). When the first empty lumber rack came into view, it sure looks as though its lead truck is turned almost 90 degrees to the rail. Is there a switch just out of view?

—Mac Date: 02/02/22 17:48 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: LocoPilot750 The spine car hit the bridge, bending the car in half, probably some damage to the bridge.

Maybe one of the trucks picked the switch. The loud bang maybe the centerbeam or hopper sideswiping a bridge support beam. Just before tipping over? Looking at google earth mapping. There are might be a signal and a flange greaser. And other stationary objects at that spot. Looks like a DP was shoving on it.
Date: 02/02/22 19:41 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: callum_out Well, if you listen at the time of the incident it took a long time for the train to go into emergency, many
seconds after the initial impact sounds. Out Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/02/22 21:42 by callum_out. Date: 02/02/22 20:04 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: TCnR They have it highlighted on a YT Video:Derailment at Santa Fe Junction Caught on Cam!12,255 views • Feb 2, 2022 •
It looks every bit the definition of a train wreck, almost took out the roadway overhead as well, cenrebeam was hanging off the crossbeam for a moment. Check out the guy plowing snow with his headphones on at the very end of the clip. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/02/22 20:07 by TCnR. Definitely seems like the DPU was pushing too hard - notice the train was quite bunched up going around the curve, and the speed seemed higher than normal. Date: 02/02/22 20:08 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: TCnR Copy and paste

If you look at the handrails on the bridge above where the car hits underneath, there is no movement at all, so hopefully no damage. An incredible catch of thirty to fifty ton cars lifting into the air, just amazing.
JB Date: 02/02/22 20:59 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: memphisfreight They almost have it cleared now. That bridge showed incredible strength, cars were like toys coming up against it. Andi it appears UP ran a coal train on the elevated section shortly afterwards, could have been much worse.
Date: 02/02/22 21:48 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: MacBeau Coal train stopped and backed off the bridge.

Date: 02/02/22 22:15 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: callum_out So as I mentioned it seemed like a long time for the train to go into emergency after the initial "bang", if the train
hed remotes they would not have dropped load until the line drop signalled the emergency application. It did sound like the wreck continued to occur as the train slowed. Out Date: 02/03/22 07:22 Re: UP derailment , Santa Fe Jct, K C Mo Author: funnelfan That inital bang was the slack running into the cars. The train was using a 90degree quadrant to the multi-track crossing taking it from a northwest heading to a northeast heading. Not sure which line the train was coming off of or where it was heading too though.
