Western Railroad Discussion > Route 66 Closed Between Ludlow and AmboyDate: 05/19/22 17:48 Route 66 Closed Between Ludlow and Amboy Author: needles_sub Because of bridges no longer being safe, Route 66 is closed between Ludlow and Amboy. Ash Hill, Bagdad, Klondike may longer be accessable.
There is no date for repairs and reopening. Looking at how long the other parts of the road have been closed off, I think it will be many years before the road is reopened, if ever. The stretch you referenced from Ludlow to Amboy is over 25 miles. Having driven some of the dirt roads that parallel the BNSF RoW in that are in an AWD vehicle with good tires and still nearly gotten stuck in the deep soft sand, BNSF might be in a pinch if they have a problem and need to get equipment in there. Given the weight limitations on many of the bridges in question, they might already have been in that situation. Dozens of vehicles just drive around the bridges, through the washes every day. I did it multiple times earlier this year while visiting Cadiz and other places along there. Just ignore the closure signs, all the locals ignore them. It is a little rough on some of the dirt road shoo-fly bypasses around the bridges but I don't think you need high clearance or 4wd. You'll be fine.

Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 05/20/22 08:45 Re: Route 66 Closed Between Ludlow and Amboy Author: coach California has a huge budget surplus--this is a very historic stretch of Route 66--hope they rebuild or fix the bridges. Glad I drove it when I did. California needs to step up and save this famous route that brought so many Americans to this state.

You'll be fine. Highway Patrol told me the only problem get called to is low clearance cars and motorhomes. they get a ticket and tow company bill. You'll be fine. The locals know what they're doing, do you? Date: 05/20/22 13:21 Re: Route 66 Closed Between Ludlow and Amboy Author: MrMRL BNSF MoW/work vehicles and Hallcon crew vans drive up and down the old highway with no issue. Then again they can probably justify their being beyond the posted barricades for work related purposes.
As for saving/rehabilitating old Rte 66? Yeah, better chance of seeing a completed third lane on I-15 between Barstow and Baker... ~ Mr. MRL Date: 05/20/22 17:06 Re: Route 66 Closed Between Ludlow and Amboy Author: callum_out If that's what CHP is saying theyv'e changed their tune but I'm sure they are tired of being asked.
