BNSF GP60Ms
Author: sarailfan

I know much of the class has been rebuilt to GP60M-3, but I think a handful remain as relatively stock GP60Ms. Does anyone have a reference as to which are -3 and which are not? Unit by unit searches aren't helpful either as I see units known to be designated -3 still labeled by the photographers as stock Ms.

I saw the 128 at Sumas WA a couple months back, and some pictures appear to show a -3 on the frame, but I'm not certain (and like to get my records correct!)

Thanks all.

Thanks for the information.  I had no idea that 2 were still unrebuilt, as I had just assumed the entire class was rebuilt around 2015-16.

Rebuilds don't seem to come in bunches anymore, for instance UP is rebuilding GP38s at the same
time it's removing some from the roster.

Thanks a bunch. Just the couple outliers then!

Well, if you have a group of 100 engines and say 12 of those for what ever reason would cost 2-3 times as much to rebuild as the others, you too would remove those from the roster.

That's a good point though you wonder how much a Class 1 truly values a 4 axle unit. It's tough for one rebuild to cost
2-3 times another in a specific class unless you're talking a wreck rebuild.

Another point is owned vs leased.

with the glut of 6 axles on the market smaller units sometimes sell for a lot more at auction, roads look at that too
