Train Thang?  I suppose this has a proper name, but I don't know what it is.   The UPRR has been replacing ties like crazy up here on Donner.  This guy picks up the old ties and, honestly, does the job rather quickly!   They came up the #1 Track gathering ties as they came until they reached MP 156 (AKA:  CP Bush to those in The Loop) and then headed back West.

According to DS Todd "Big Harv" Harvey, it's called the "worm".   He gave me a "heads-up" on it when it came by me last year-- odd-looking but does the job, as you said, SR.
Did you catch the Pepsi can 160 today?  I posted that earlier today, but didn't know if it was leading or not. 
Nice coverage of the "worm" , BTW... If you handed up cookies to it at "CP BUSH" they might disappear a LOT quicker than when you hand them up to us...  Worm's can't live on ties alone!!

Hope someone can give us background who build the little locomotive and what kind of prime mover it has.
East end unit has very nice sounding Nathan P3 horn, west end K3.

Built by Relco in Albia Iowa. They have done these for UP and CP, I think they used old SD40-2's as a base.

And the company will tell you VERY LOUDLY that this is NOT a train but a piece of MOW equipment and can be run by MOW employees. No train crew required.

That was gonna be my question.   So MoW people drive this diesel locomotive powered non-train.  Who qualifies them?   Can it go track speed? 

Nice Catch!  We saw one heading Westbound today at our Willcox, AZ camera location.

UP would probably emphasize that it is not a "locomotive," it is a "machine."  They go to the expense of the different car body on the power to ensure it can't be mistaken for a locomotive.  I wonder if they did away with the control stand for accelerator and brake pedals?  Does this MoW thing have air brakes or electrically controlled brakes?

Built on
SD40 platforms and traditional controls, but FRA sez “By golly it don’t look like no locomotive and the Carrier wants it, so…..”.

Bring back the ICC.

(Or at least a governing body with intestinal fortitude).

Interesting beast !

Take the "F" off both sides of the frame and throw away the blue card.....It is now a machine, not a Locomotive.

So, MOW equipment is moved under Track & Time authority and under MOW rules. Does this "machine" operate under T&T authority also or does it operate under "signal indication", normal train operating rules?

any more photos that show the engine and tail car numbers?  I model this train in 3D printed in N scale and have yet to see this "white roof" version of the 7 or 8 that are patroling the rails.
