A lucky day in February of 1972 in Claremont, CA.
Author: lamta_jay

All taken on February 12, 1972 and I was with my friend Lee Meyers

First 2 at the almost exact location in Claremont, First Lee and I saw the
Highland Park Turns headlight and after it passed we heard the sound  of
a P3 Nathan Airchime and  had to move to my right
where the old PE San Bernardino Line was and the Baldwin Park Switcher
was headed east !
Then the SP-PE has set all of its cars and is headed back to Baldwin Park
to tie up for the day !
The 2 hoppers were set out at Upland and the box car at Alta Loma.

Wow, amazing to see the area around the Claremont depot so open with not many trees or other buildings.  By the time I discovered it around 1990, the downtown village was more developed - with a parking structure just to the east of the station.  And the SP had trackage rights over the Santa Fe for about a mile by then, after the removal of the former PE rails through downtown.

Great photos!

Thanks for the great memories! As a Pasadena boy I crept around the Second District all the time.

Have fun, be safe,

I grew up one block south of the ATSF depot in Claremont.  The station master, Mr. Fagg, taught me so mucch about railroading when I was ten years old.  It was a wonderful place to hang out in the summer.  Always trains, on both the ATSF and Southern Pacific with all of the citrus packing houses.  This was in the early 1950s.
