It was another sunny Hot day in Ritzville, WA on the BNSF Lakeside Sub on the Northern Transcon. The high-low was 96-61, with cooler temps on the way for a couple of days, then 100's return. Don't know traffic count due to Monitor being down since last evening. Hope it comes up soon. Here are some trains from yesterday and one from today.

8/2/2022

1. First two trains out of sequence. EB 613pm manifest train with BNSF 7963-6036 on the point with no DPU.
2. Old SP auto rack rolling in same train.
3. A string of MRL covered gondolas rolling in same train.

4. Old Ex-CNW hopper rolling in same train.
5. EB 320pm manifest train with BNSF 7547, Warbonnet 794 and BNSF 7882 on the pull with no DPU.
6. EB 545pm manifest train with BNSF 3965-8047, Warbonnet 685 and BNSF 7471 on the point with no DPU. Thanks Zachary!

#20 shows the Key System A train at its terminus at 12th and Oak Streets after service to Havenscourt in East Oakland was discontinued.
#21 shows the C train on Yerba Buena Ave, about to cross San Pablo Ave.  What's noteworthy is that the Sacramento Northern Railway shared the Key System tracks as far as 40th and Shafter Streets.

I see strings of those MRL covered gondolas in the yard at Garrison, Montana, leading me to believe they come from the Butte area on the BNSF Copper City sub.

Photo 19: Los Angeles Railway's U-Line in the 1940's formed a giant inverted 'U' between two legs. The western leg 
began at Vermont Ave and Florence, traveled northward through the USC campus on McClintock Ave, into downtown
Los Angeles on Figueroa where it turned eastward on 5th St before turning south at Central Ave and terminated at
Central & Slauson---the distance between the end points being but 3.6 miles, as the crow flies.

This McVay photo has all the markings of being somewhere along the bottom--upper, if you will, leg of the 'U' on 5th St.
before turning southward to Slauson. The line truck seen in the photo could very well have been involved the conversion of that part of
the U-Line to trolley coach operation that took place on August 3, 1947. We know that Los Angeles Transit Lines, the purchaser of
LARy in 1945 used LARy"s Division 1 car house and yard at 6th & Central, on the route of the U-Line, for the home base of all trolley coach 
operations from 1947 until final abandonment by LAMTA of all electric---rail and trolley coach---operations in 1963.

EDIT: The conversion of the U-Line was directly to buses in 1947--not trolley coaches. As often happens, I allowed my words to outpace the facts.
To clarify the paragraph above and upon further reading, I find that at the time of the photo, two other LATL lines, "3" and "D" shared 5th St in the
area with the U-Line as part of their routes.Technically, the U-Line never converted to trolley coach operations--the 3-Line did make the conversion
in 1947 and any work the line truck may have been involved with in that regard would have been in favor of the 3-Line; not the U-Line.

Ritzville Action
The trains keep rolling without missing a beat.
Only two foreign units, both KCS,  Otherwise, all BNSF power.
Especially like old C&NW Hopper (Photo 4)

Historic Traction
19 - Historic  scene in color from the 1940's; line truck adds interest..
21 - Nice action scene; really like the tower.
22 - Oakland GM New Look  coach has an attractive paint scheme.
23 - Passenger hauling days are over for those two Twin coaches.

I remember first seeing those old Twin Coaches when my family first moved to Cleveland in the mid-50's and thinking how odd they looked after GM's and Macks I was used to seeing, so thanks for posting.  

I suspect the covered cars are hauling some sort of enviromentally unfriendly material somewhere.  That's usually what these cars haul.
