Western Railroad Discussion > BNSF 194, sad trifecta"Date: 09/15/22 10:47 BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: santafe199 Back in 2014 I happened to be in Newton, KS at just the right time. I shot the Abilene-bound local just coming by the Amtrak passenger station. No big deal. But it was the lead unit that really caught my eye! Once I saw it was engine 194 coming at me in Blue & Yellow I immediately had this thread title written up in my mind: ( 194 Rides Again! (attn: PRose...) (trainorders.com) ). Back in 1980 one of my 5 KS Gang bros Bob Helling, aka ‘PRose’ here on TO had attached himself to Santa Fe train 194, a Chicago ~ Denver hotshot. Being a UP engineer up at Salina my 194 was for all intents & purposes a mirror image of his KP train 117. With pigs on the point, high value merchandise business trailing and fast running schedules these 2 trains could indeed have been close cousins!
I found the 194 again about a year later, and chased it as far as daylight allowed. In that chase I shot enough material for a “redux” thread: ( 194 rides again (redux) (trainorders.com) ). Because of the story behind the lead unit number both threads drew a little bit of interest. In the second thread I made this comment to Dalton McAdams: "Looks like I'll have to catch it a 3rd time for a trifecta..." Turns out I did catch the 194 again. But it ain’t pretty! With the current BNSF push to cleanse more Santa Fe blue & yellow from its ranks it would appear that I found the 194 in the nick of time. That white “X” on its nose sure looks ominous... 1. 2. & 3. BNSF blue & yellow 194 sits in a Topeka, KS backlot, looking old & tired. It may be the “golden hour”, but the 194’s future sure looks gloomy... Edited 1 time(s). 4. A wider angled shot with few more fellow “inmates” sitting in quiet anticipation of their fate... (4 photos taken August 20, 2022) Thanks for the blue & yellow! Hopefully, that is what will happen to this unit.
JB Date: 09/15/22 10:58 Re: BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: sfbrkmn I remember train 194 when it was active and is discussed in my mill book. Daytime train that was observed quite often from high above ground level at the Broadway crossing.
Sam Date: 09/15/22 11:20 Re: BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: texchief1 I went back to "194 rides again" and that was some very good shots!
RC Lundgren Date: 09/15/22 11:40 Re: BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: PHall The GP60's are supposed to get their rebuilds like the GP60M's got. Supposed to be starting this year. Which is probably why it's in Topeka.
Date: 09/15/22 11:55 Re: BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: SouthWestRailCams We saw three heading Westbound on 08/30/2022. BNSF 188, BNSF 194, and BNSF 196 still in their Santa Fe Colors.

Have seen both of them in the past year at Kaiser. Now that is unexpected good news! Maybe they can hold out a while longer... :^) Lance/199 Date: 09/15/22 17:56 Re: BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: Roadmaster X's like the white one on 194's nose seem to be BNSF's response to tagging. These X's are more often to applied with black paint, and these X's can also be five times larger than the one on 194's nose. There are some six-axle units out there with five or more X's on them "cancelling" gratuitous amounts of graffiti. The first time I see such X's I thought I was seeing a unit that BNSF had sold, as the X's were on the "BNSF" on the side of the long hood.

Some of the 7700s have come back from mods at RELCO/Wabtec with new H3 paint because they were so badly tagged. Date: 09/15/22 20:02 Re: BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: PHall MP555 Wrote:

A new paint job is part of the rebuild of the GP60's just like it was with the GP60M's. Date: 09/16/22 06:27 Re: BNSF 194, sad trifecta" Author: redberan4449 |
