Western Railroad Discussion > Military and general freight

On Monday 9-12-22 I was photographing trains at Clear Lake, MN between Northtown and Staples on the BNSF and caught this eastbound H-PASNTW with BNSF 7690 leading.  Train make up was pretty interesting with general freight up front, military equipment after that, more general freight, more military and more general freight.  All of the military eqipment were these same type of vehicles.  Not really up on the military stuff.  What kind of vehicles are these?  It was kind of nice to see something other than tagged boxcars.

Those are Stryker Armored Fighting Vehicles. In particular although I can't read the bumper number cleary, the logo looks like that of the 1st Styker Brigade Combat Team
25th Infantry Divison based @ Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

 

The red cross on our equipment in Vietnam didn't do us much good.  It just gave the Vietcong and the NVA something to aim at.

All the bumper numbers are hard to read but one appears to be 1/25ID 1-24IN on the left and A-11 on the right sticker.

The Stryker must be capable of freeway driving as I seem to recall  passing about ten or so of them eastbound on I-90 going over Snoqualmie Pass in Washington state a few weeks ago.  Wikipedia says they were built in 2002 up in Ontario, Canada.  Interesting a US Army vehicle was built in Canada.

They can do 60 mph and wikipedia is not exactly correct because they're still building them.

The Strykers have left Alaska as the 11th Airborne Div has taken over the Stryker brigades as airborne brigades. Last Stryker just left Alaska.
