Found this  EX  BNSF unit at Kalama WA.
Hard to believe The BNSF H1's are running all over the place and even on the point at times.
And  newer power is being off loaded to leasing company's.
GECX  # 4944  EX  BNSF  setting at Kalama WA. There was a sticker unit in the group looking faded out all ready.

Simple, just the difference between lease and ownership.

Maybe the 12-cylinder engines get too beat up and worn down producing the same amount of horsepower with less cylinders?

Both the 960-class locomotives in "H1" paint and the lease-returned 4944 are Dash 9-44CW's with 16-cylinder FDL engines.

So, do you park 100 older locos that are owned, so that you can run 100 leased newer locos

or do return the 100 lease locos and run your owned power

its all about the Benjamins

Might also be worth mentioning that 4944 was built in November 1998, while the 960-class was built between July 1996 and January 1997.  The 4944 is "newer," but is a 24 year old Dash 9 really that much better than a 26 year old Dash 9?
