Assuming the buses were used to transport workers to and from the site from Idaho Falls.

Weather has cooled and so has the train traffic. Good to see the coal and oil trains as well as the manifest and colorfil intermodal trains. Old ATSF hopper was certainly a very nice catch. Unit Of The Day is BNSF #8542. Historic Traction 18 - A wonderful bucolic interurban station scene. 19 - A photo classic. Auto on right is pre-WWII. Three buses L to R are: Twin transit coach, GM Model PDA4101 highway coach, and White transit coach. GM Old Look transit coach is behind the White. Autos in parking lot appear to be post-WWII 1940's. 21 - The six buses in the scene were built by Crown Coach, a California manufacturer. 22 - Bus #937 is a GM Model TDH4512 Thanks for posting another edition of your super action and traction series. Your time is definitely appreciated. ALLEN Date: 09/29/22 22:10 Re: Light Days On The BNSF Lakeside Sub--A Bit Of Traction Author: Ritzville Thanks Mike for your info on the NRTS crown buses, much appreciated. Thanks Allen for your interesting reviews and the many different bus models, always appreciated.
Larry Date: 09/29/22 22:42 Re: Light Days On The BNSF Lakeside Sub--A Bit Of Traction Author: cewherry No 18 is very unique if for no other reason than the rail car we see sitting in front of the Glendora Station.
The car, running extra on an excursion as denoted by the white flag displayed is none other than the 999. It started life on Los Angeles Pacific in 1907 as their 747. Rebuilt and renumbered 909 in 1909 at LAP's Sherman Shops (West Hollywood), it was given the name "El Viento"--the wind, the LAP's finest car, equipped with toilet, leather chairs, divans, drapery and a five-window front end complete with curved glass at the corners. Pacific Electric obtained the car as part of the 1911 'Great Merger' and promptly rebuilt the car again, moving the toilet to the middle, and installing bulkheads to form cabs at each end and a given a new number; 01. As PE business car, 01 was soon displaced by car, 1000 in 1915, which was capable of operating on the new 1200 volt San Bernardino line, relegating 01 to secondary status. On December 17, 1925, 01 was renumbered 999, remaining a business car but stored at PE's new shops at Torrance. In 1928-29 car 999 was included in the modernization of the 950-993 class cars but retained two distinctive features; 999 has has twin over-sized side windows, while somewhat similar, 994-998 (also veterans of excursion service), had similar side elevations those five cars retained the LAP three-window ends. PE's 1000's, were similar to 999, with five-window ends but sported only one oversized side window. These peculiarities made the 999 a favorite among railfans, asked for on many excursion trips leading up to its retirement and scrapping in 1950. The last electric rail passenger service on PE's Northern District was September 30, 1951---71 years ago, tomorrow---and I was aboard the last revenue trip to Monrovia, 8.18 miles west of Glendora, with dad, mom and brother Bill, of course. I remember parts of that trip as if it was yesterday! No 19 shows the 1942 built Los Angeles St bus deck. The photo shows the ramp leading from Maple St upward to the deck which was attached to the rear of PE's headquarters building at 6th & Main Sts. The box motor peeking its roof above some motor coaches is on tracks that were originally part of PE's 7th St surface yard. Photo had to be made prior to November 1952, date of last box-motor operations. Charlie Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/29/22 22:49 by cewherry. Date: 09/29/22 22:45 Re: Light Days On The BNSF Lakeside Sub--A Bit Of Traction Author: SGillings The PE car in photo 18 looks like probably an excursion, what with the white flag. Also, it looks like a member of the "ten" class. The web page of the Electric Railway Historical Association states that the use of the wooden cars (the Tens and the 950 class) ended with the abandonment of the Venice Short Line on 09/17/1950. I'm certain that Charlie can add much more information.
Steve Date: 09/29/22 22:53 Re: Light Days On The BNSF Lakeside Sub--A Bit Of Traction Author: Ritzville Thanks Charlie for a very interesting schoolroom discussion on the PE 999, so many interesting facts, very ejoyable.
