More Adventures Along the Oregon Trunk
Author: billmeeker

I spent some time with BNSF's Bend Local last week, following it north out of Bend toward Madras, and then back south.  It was a full-day's work for train crew and photographer.

1.  The local, behind geeps 2634 and 2641, heads north as it approaches the Crooked River near Terrebonne, OR.

2.  The local has ducked in the clear at Opal as BNSF 7119 south motors across the Crooked River bridge.  Mount Hood, a stratovolcano and Oregon's highest mountain, looms in the distance.

3.  Later in the afternoon, the local has finished its chores in Madras and heads back south through Terrebonne.  Smith Rock State Park occupies the background.

4.  The local switches Prineville Jct., connection with the City of Prineville Railway.

5.  The local switches at an industrial park at Redmond.

6.  Nearing the end of its run, the local passes through Deschutes on its way back to Bend.

7.  At Deschutes, BNSF 7622 north pulls up the north switch after the local clears.  CN 5632 is an SD75I, an uncommon model for EMD.  Only about 200 were built, mostly for CN.

8.  The next day, I caught a vehicle rack repo move headed north near Terrebonne, with Smith Rock State Park in the background.

Hope you have been enjoying my adventures along the Oregon Trunk.

Great pictures.  Thanks for sharing.  I checked the OT out last Saturday when I was in Bend for a high school football playoff.

Does the UP still use its trackage rights to Bend?

Now there is a view of Crooked River Gorge one does not see everyday. Nice work on that one.

Good stuff, always room for Oregon Trunk Tuesday.

Uncle Pete gave up on the OT 'Bend local' 5 or 10 years ago, They seem to still have access for detours. No doubt some one has better info.

Love the Madras aerial as the railroad comes in on a straight shot and the road is out following some
mountain goat. What work did the local have at Madras?

Re: Does the UP still use its trackage rights to Bend?

While UP has not utilized their trackage rights in some time, they still have access to customers their Bend local once served via haulage over BNSF. UP interchanges cars with BNSF at Klamath Falls that this BNSF Bend roadswitcher now spots/pulls for UP.

There is an industral park in Madras (near the airport) that the local works.  AFAIK, that's as far north as the local goes.
