Loaded unit grain shuttle train thundering in the chilly night...
Author: jmulhol2

A 3x1 westbound 116-car, 6,700-foot-long, >16,700-ton loaded unit grain shuttle train (consisting entirely of three-bay-covered-hopper cars) is seen here passing MP96 on the BNSF Hillsboro Subdivision in Grand Forks, ND, during the chilly nighttime hours of 11/21/2022. This train was loaded at the "CHS, Inc." grain elevator in Ruthton, MN, along the BNSF Marshall Subdivision, and is eventually bound for Tacoma, WA, to be unloaded onto large ships to be taken westward across the Pacific Ocean to the Asian markets. This train is running "Route B" with a relief crew that got on the train at Bison (just north of Fargo, ND), meaning that instead of taking the BNSF KO Subdivision directly from Fargo, ND, to Minot, ND (and beyond), it is taking the BNSF Hillsboro Subdivision to the BNSF Devils Lake Subdivision from Fargo, ND, to Grand Forks, ND, to Minot, ND (and beyond), presumably with a Minot, ND-based crew returning to home base. Also note the funky horn on the lead motor.

Train symbol: G-RUTTAC

Power:
BNSF #7531 (GE ES44DC; built: 04/2007; odd horn)
BNSF #7698 (GE ES44DC; built: 05/2005; H2 paint scheme GEVO)
BNSF #5217 (GE C44-9W; built: 09/2003)
x
BNSF #5232 (GE C44-9W; built: 05/2002)
