American Crystal Sugar-bound loaded coal unit train - Grand Forks
Author: jmulhol2

A 2x1 westbound (geographically northbound) 129-car loaded "SUGX" unit coal train bound for Ardoch, ND (coal transload facility) is seen here passing around MP00.35 on BNSF's Glasston Subdivision in Grand Forks, ND during the late afternoon hours of 11/29/2022. This train will terminate in the loop track in Ardoch, ND for unloading into a pit which is then transported via conveyor belts to be piled high outside for storage. From there, this coal will be loaded onto and transported by Holland M-Bar-D trucks to the 5 different American Crystal Sugar factories up/down the Red River Valley for burning and power output throughout the winter. The 5 different American Crystal Sugar factories are (from south-to-north): Moorhead, MN - Hillsboro, ND - Crookston, MN - East Grand Forks, MN - Drayton, ND. There are currently two train "sets" - this one consisting mainly of "SUGX" open coal hoppers and another consisting mainly of "CITX" open coal hoppers - both of which get loaded at Spring Creek Mine, MT.
