New Contract Start Date
Author: DLM

Now that our government has saved America from the evil railroad employees, when will the new contract start?  On what date will bonuses and back pay be paid?

I would guess that they will wait until the last day to pay out the back pay, out of spite.  Coming soon:  The Great Railroad Employee Resignation of 2023.

Not me since just three yrs of the "it" show remaining but, yes, there will be another of walk-offs coming. Sad part is many of these workers are good ones out here. Many have stayed around to obtain the back pay and for many now on the ballast, that will be it and there is no one out there wanting to come in after them. Cannot blame the general public for no iterest in rr employment.Right now the industry will hire just about anyone. The group of anyone's are saying "no thanks".

Having a one person in the cab isn't a good idea if the one person is barely qualified.

But, they'll find that out soon enough...

if that happens, those leaving should consider careers in public safety (police/fire).  good pay, pensions, and paid SICK TIME.

good luck to you all............

The effective date along with the date payments are due would be Jan 1, 2023 and payments likely the first payday therafter. While the carriers no dubt have expected this outcome and already were loading new pay tables, it will take a little while to mark it effective...and certainly time to run each employee's pay history so as to accurately compute backpay.

Mileage may vary amount roads. The new rate of pay went into effect this week on my road for Engineers. Just as the company said it would. Backpay has been promised by Christmas.

Isn't this the 2020-2024 contract with the next contract starting in 2025?
(There are elements that are dated 2023 such as the health care premiums employee contribution and new personal leave day.)

And to be clear, are you saying that anyone who left railroad employment will not get the back pay for this contract period?

Hopefully the 2025-2029 contract won't take as long to negotiate as this one.

Most railroad companies have already put aside money for the expected settlement and back pay, etc.

One common practice is to accrue the liability, and settle up when an agreement is finally reached

There's a Q&A sheet that explains WHO gets the backpay....there does have be limits or you'd be digging up dead people to give them a check!

Sometime in 2024 with a view to beginning negotations soon therafter...however both section 6's will be pie in the sky and each side will declare they have nothing in common and won't meet to negotiate....I look to retire in 2027 and still be waiting and after this roller coaster I probably won't care.

Uh no. Engineer pay raise has already came into effect. Back pay 60 days from ratification

Care to share or it it something you received internally? (I'm not easily finding public information.)
The AAR website has some information ... I don't see "who" specified.

The contract only covers work from 2020-2024 so it would need to be the recently deceased (although a lot of people have died in the past three years).
If it is back pay for underpaid wages the railroads should at least be digging up the estates of their former employees.

In many states, the estate o f a deceased employee has rights for time worked, etc. There's a whole section of pension law about retro adjustments.
