What's in a Train; UP's MHKNP
Author: funnelfan

Monday afternoon around 3pm I lucked out and caught the MHKNP (Hinkle - North Platte) setting out it's second unit in a side track (UP SD70ACE #8707) because of a hot bearing. After the lead unit was back on the train I was able to photographed the locomotives and any cars of interest as it slowly pulled down the South Pass siding at Onatrio, OR. The train featured a pair of running gensets, which is highly unusual.

Great thread, thanks.   Looks like both Gensets have only 1 of 3 power units running, looking at the hinged stack covers.  Would they be on-line and pulling, or just isolated for transfer to some other location?   Would they, could they be moved with all 3 power units shut down?

I asked Mapboy about a question yesterday, maybe you know:  Is UP running both an MHKNP and MPDNP now?  Last year UP was down to just one scheduled PNW-North Platte carload freight (though I speculated UP ran a bunch of extras).

According to my sources, both trains are running. Not sure if they're both daily or not. FWIW, the last train lineup I saw for Hinkle showed a MPDNPX as well.

Is the MHKPD still running, or now the MHKEU?  Thanks!

Always enjoy threads showing the freight cars.  That IC steel coil cover is a rare one!

One engine running is the normal idle mode of the Gensets. The second and third engines are started only when their power is needed.
If they were Dead in Consist all three engines would be shut down.
