The future looked dim for not just the railroad but the several hundred workers in Babbit and Silver Bary, Minnesoda. Word has it, that Northshore is coming back, starting in April. For a bit of history, the railway was originally Reserve Mining employing first generation EMD SD series units. Fast forward thru year and Northshore entered the third generation with a small fleet of SD70ACe's supplementing a fleet of SD40-2's and SD40 rebuilds from Alsthom.

Cliffs (owner and miner) tried to freeze out the Mesabi Trust because they don't like paying the royalties, but Northshore is a really good mine and operation with many recent upgrades, so many industry observers thought it wouldn't be shuttered too long. The processing plant has the ability to make regular taconite pellets for blast furnaces and DRI-grade pellets for HBI and EAF production, which is the direction the steel business is heading. It's really to Cliffs' benefit to run Northshore, esp. in the long term and if they can renegotiate the royalty payments. Besides the fact that they can use all the output themselves as feedstock at a lower price than paying someone else for it.

Only six built for domestic use, Reserve Mining bought four in two orders, the other pair went to Columbus & Greenville in Mississippi. Awesome, rare gems. I think 3 of them are still operating up there (one was wrecked).
