Western Railroad Discussion > Union Pacific along the Los Angeles River 03/26/23

I headed out Sunday morning to meet a buddy and shoot the Amtrak Southwest Chief deadhead down to 8th Street with P42DC #203, the OLS unit, leading. Damn trian took forever to come, but in the meantime I managed to bag three freights on the River Sub (and even heard a fourth chatting on the radio). 

First image is of the a San Antonio to Long Beach intermodal. It had a GEVO up front and a GEVO towards the back.

Second image is of a Los Angeles transfer job, bringing engines and containers, I assume, from Shops to East LA.

Third image is again of the Los Angeles transfer job.

Images four and five are of the power on a Roseville to Los Angeles manifest hostling (is that a word?) to Shops after yarding their train at 4th Street. HELP! 

Note, the El Pato building behind the engines was at one time a Union Pacific freight station.

On the bridge there , especially during daylight, isnt bad.    I wouldnt have a problem with it.   If u think all of LA is dangerous, you've been reading too much yellow journalism.

Looks like a third-world country.

You know it's bad when the graffiti is on horizontal surfaces, like sidewalks.

The clear air and visible mountains weren't a part of my Los Angeles childhood. The improvement in air quality in Southern California has been astounding.

It's the angle of the photos.  There's lots of snow on the peaks from Mt. Wilson to Mt. Baldy, also on Mt. San Gorgonio and Mt. San Jacinto.

Pretty standard on the south facing slopes. The look from Palmdale/Lancaster is much different.

Growing up in Southern California in the 70's I remember many school smog days, including some restricted to indoors wheezing staging 3 days.

Nice bunch from mostly unseen locations.

When I see that river I expect a Hollywood chase scene.

I raced down there in the late 1950s.  Also used to drive from Taylor Yard down into the river around the diesel shops (like Nascar banking) to Redondo Jct,  coming up under the 4th Street bridge.  Was fun to take visiting fans on a wild ride.....John/Dave Ingles come to mind.

No worse then many other parts of LA including the Valley. But to each their own.
