Western Railroad Discussion > UP Passenger Special This MorningDate: 05/23/23 14:01 UP Passenger Special This Morning Author: TheNavigator Having arrived a night or two ago via the Yuma Sub, the 10-car UP passenger train departed LATC for Council Bluffs this morning by way of Cajon Pass.
Because of the usual morning May gray/June gloom overcast in the LA basin and valleys, the closest direct sunlight was Summit and east. We set up at MP 42 in Hesperia but, as the train was running with the flow of freight traffic and didn’t appear to have any special priority, the sun angle was a bit less than desired by the time it rolled past. Even so, it was worth the drive and wait, and gave me a chance to catch up in person with a railfan friend who was in the area after having relocated out of state. As always, thanks for the heads up and position reports this morning. Thanks for looking, GK 1. Instead of the usual 4404 as the lead motor, today 6965 and 4533 led cars 2066, Columbia River, Pony Express, Kenefick, 5769, Portola, Omaha, Walter Dean, City of Los Angeles, and Fox River at MP42. 2. Closer view of 6965. 3. On-board personnel, presumably enjoying the ride. Edited 1 time(s). JG Date: 05/24/23 13:40 Re: UP Passenger Special This Morning Author: NPRocky I wonder if there's a recent roster of the UP passenger fleet. Didn't they just get rid of a bunch of cars, mostly coaches?
