Warbonnet leading in the Canyon
Author: BrianA

Yesterday 5-23-23 was treated to the BNSf 738 leading the U-TACHKN, an empty oil train, deep in the ex-NP's Yakima River Canyon and soon to exit the canyon and head through Pomona and Yakima, WA as it continues east.  While the hills are a bit brown at least it's still green around the Yakima River.

I know the TAC is Tacoma, the originating point but don't know what the destination of HKN is.  Anyone know?  With the steady stream of grain empties and orange and black GEVO's this train was a welcome sight!

Is this the same line as Stampede Pass?

Yes it is.  Stampede Sub from Auburn to Ellensburg and Yakima Valley Sub from Ellensburg to Pasco.  And it is one crew district from Auburn to Pasco.

"HKN" is indeed Hankinson, North Dakota... (extreme SE corner, next to central Minnesota). There is a large corn-ethanol plant owned/operated by Guardian Renewable Energy, LLC just east of town there.

I worked in Yakima for a while, loved driving the Canyon to Ellensburg and watching the semaphores.
