Since the predecessor codes were less succient, WB would have been a 198 or 188 and EB a 891/881.

Didn't those originate/terminate at Hobart, not SB?

When did the intermodal ramp at SB open? And didn't it start as purely JBHunt?

The 8 origin/destination code was for Southern California. So it could be LA, San Diego or San Bernardino.
The current codes are much more specific.

Exactly, there never was a true IM ramp at Berdoo until around 2000?

The bigger intermodal ramp taking the place of the A yard and shops was completed in 1995, but there was a smaller intermodal ramp at SB A yard west of Mt. Vernon Ave. prior to that. At that time, LA trains picked up and set out the SB trailers, a practice which continued for a while after the bigger ramp was opened until SB began running its own full trains.
I don't know that the 198/891 regularly worked SB, they were the hottest UPS trains. 893 did sometimes work at SB as did other intermodals like 168, 861, SLACH, SCHLA, QLANY, and QNYLA.

Backing the clock up to this time in 1983, the 883 & 178 (before changing to 893 & 198) were routed on the northern corridor through Raton, La Junta & Newton. At Newton, both were evening trains. La Junta crews said on many nights, provided no other crews were rested @ Dodge City, 883 would arrive w/178 already arrived & waiting for the inbound crew to board and take bk to Lajunt making a round trip flip. Now retired engr Bruce Corey told me that when working w/him @ Garden City many yrs ago. Sam

They were the Q-LAWS and Q-WSLA. Those trains were established as hot LTL trains just before the merger.
