Great airbnb along the Transcon (Mountainair)
Author: jgilmore

Staying at a very nice rental (airbnb and VRBO) that abuts the BNSF Transcon just outside Mountainair, NM. The rental is situated on a hill with great western views of the mountains and the mainline not too far away from the outdoor patio or just looking right through the sliding door if you'd rather sit inside. Of course, trains are constant with several meets right in front of you and EBs can easily be heard (horns and scanner) and seen well before getting close, while WBs give little notice unless you have the ATCS hooked up or can grab your camera in about 15-20 seconds as you hear them rumble downhill into view. Anyways, here's a few pics from our first afternoon and the light isn't bad for either direction. Over the next few days I'll check out the morning light and maybe wander down to the tracks on the owner's 200-acre property since the southern boundary runs right along the mainline and they don't care where you go. Highly recommend this place as a base for the Clovis Sub or just kicking back and grilling some steaks and drinking a beer while armchair trainwatching...

1) EB grinding up to Mountainair
2) WB rolls downhill about to meet an EB
3) Same WB meets the EB

Three more to come,

4) Another meet
5) EB racks taken over the head of the resident horse on the fence at the patio
6) EB racks/manifest at sunset

Wow, great location!  You've got me checking out availability already.

Of course, you have to deal with some horse's ass getting in your shot at the last minute. But that can happen anywhere...

Only $120 a night!  No train picture in the Airbnb ad, but at least one reviewer mentions the tracks.  I'll have to keep this place in mind.

Looks like a great place to stay, despite the terrible listing photos :)

Thanks for posting!

I've lived at three different places near railroad tracks, and at the distance at this Airbnb, most people are going to sleep thru the trains, but they wont know it till they stay there.  Best for them not to advertise the trains.

Thank you thank you thank you for this tip!  I will be passing through next month, just made a reservation for three nights. Two days of trackside chill, maybe work on some modeling projects.

Life is good, (or at least it will be, for a while...

Thanks, glad you could stop by, I just made another reservation for later in the year. Also discovered you can find lots of angles closer to the tracks and walk right up to the ROW on the property, although the weather today was cloudy and the trains were slow when I walked over there. Pretty awesome place, inside and outside!
