Current status of Bakken oil trains in Dakotas
Author: march_hare

Can anybody provide a brief summary of where Bakken oil trains are currently getting loaded?  I haven't seen any on the east coast in quite a while now, and was wondering where they're being loaded and what the current destinations are.

As it happens, I will be in the area shortly and would like to see some if I can.

thanks in advance.

Bakken is correct. All North Dakota- On the BNSF HILine:
-Stanley
-Manitou
-Tioga
-Epping
-Trenton
On the BNSF (ex NP):
-Eland
-Fryburg
On the CP:
New Town

Getting up close will be a problem. I don't know about the load outs on the HiLine but on the BNSF Dickinson Sub Eland, just west of Dickinson, you can drive up right next to the load out on the east side: Take old US 10 to 115th SW, turn left (south) when you pop over the hill it will be right in front of you. BTW these oil guys are kinda sensitive about photographing or video so be discreet. Fryburg is no way to get close. I used to drive crews to /from Fryburg and it's "no cameras" on company property.

Pricing in the various markets means the cost of transportation weighs against long hauls for Bakken Crude these days. So you see a lot of it heading the refinieries in the PNW and some of it being loaded onto barges and ships too. Loaded crude oil trains are a regular sight on BNSF's Lakeside Sub in Eastern Washington.

At $13-$15 per barrel rail cost when shipping to the US East coast, imported oil from Nigeria, Angola, etc looks very competitive.

Some higher cost properties in the Bakken have been shut in, awaiting better prices. US oilfield costs have soared in recent years.
