Return to Boulder City for GP30 Thursday (Nevada)
Author: cchan006

UP's Cima Sub radio traffic was quiet on a Sunday morning in Las Vegas, so I wandered over to Boulder City to see what the Nevada Southern Railway was running in the late morning.

The excursion train was led by GP30 UP 844, but unlike my visit last year, the GP30 and the train faced west instead of east. I decided to document the train again, picking 2 locations from last year, but with different angles, then the bridge over Veterans Memorial Drive. I skipped the bridge in the past, because the power line gets in the way, but for the sake of documenting, I tried it this time.

The horn sounds like the K5LA, what one might hear on some Amtrak locomotives.

F40PH Bonus in Boulder City, NV

While at the museum, F40PH #231 got my attention. Property of DynaRail or Dynamic Rail Preservation, Inc.

The Merci Train boxcar came from Carson City, NV, where I last saw it almost 2 decades ago.

That's it for Thirty Thursday with a F40PH bonus.

24-25 miles from The Strip to Nevada Southern Railway's grounds. Quick Google search says 25 miles = $72.50 for a taxi in Las Vegas.

If you can figure out how to make a connection to RTC (Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada) Bus #221, then that's the route that will take you to Boulder City. About 2.5 hour trip one way.

I see the railbike operator gave up on the location and moved out of Boulder City.  The State really screwed that up.  They had Rail Explorers there and they were doing well.  Then Mendocino Railway came in and outbid everyone, but never consumated the deal.  The next highest bidder took over and they gave up.

Very nice coverage, really like your video!
And at first glance, that video thumbnail looks like a picture from a model railroad.

I browsed around the Nevada Southern's web site and they promise the rail bikes will come back in autumn of this year. But it seems they couldn't keep a good thing going.

I didn't realize there was a wye at the NSRRM-Boulder City, otherwise how would they turn the engine?

I was reading the history of the railroad on one of the signs posted at the museum, and it seems the wye has been there since the Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam's old name) construction days.

It was used for years as an equipment storage track, they must have cleaned it out a bit.

Great report! I would love to visit that place sometime. Love the GP30 paint scheme.
