Another long PSR train in the West Desert

Stopped by the Salt Plant on my way to Wendover to see this train. 3X2X3.

Amazing! I'm sure if there was a problem the cure would be to lay off more mechanical people. It's nice to see some SD70-Ms still earning revenue....

They assembled it in Sparks? Would it continue like that east from Salt Lake?

Wow got to thinking somehow the video slipped a notch and was seeing some of it over again.......................must have taken quite some time to assemble that one. Was it made up so sections with power could be cut off at different points?

Why so many single stacked cars?

I see some stack cars have two (2) 20' containers in the bottom well.  If both of those containers have a net weight of 25-27 tons, that's 50-54 net tons.  Is that the limit for these well cars?

That still doesn't explain the single stacked 53' boxes, which probably are also at 25-27 net tons.  

Anyone know the max net weight these cars can carry??

That train ran over Donner on Saturday as a  solid Intermodel train running 3 x 2 x 3. I was wondering why it had so much power (3 units on the rear?)

DS 9 said the train was 500 plus axles. It had several containers broken into and had to stop for inspection around Verdi.

The rear 45 manifest cars must have been added at Sparks or Elko. So that train had to be 700 + axles. Wow.

118,500 lbs per well for a Maxi-IV (53ft articulated), 124,00 lbs/well for a Maxi-I (40ft well), 169,000 lbs for a Husky (single well 53ft)

Wow, what a ridiculously sized train!  About the time the rear end cleared the Sparks yard yard limits, the head end crew was probably calling Roper Yard in SLC for landing instructions....

The HPT ratio was probably too high, so they added more cars to fix it.

Watching this whopper got me thinking. What's the MAX number of locomotives that can be DPU'd together?

In addition to weight considerations, IM cars are loaded by destination, customer, and gate times. It's a fairly complicated procedure. More so than just loading from one end of the track to the other.

I believe the DPU software will allow up to 5 sets of power to be DPU'd to each other. That being said, each of those consists could and likely would have mulitple locomotives.
