Kingman, AZ - a different perspective of downtown
Author: Super_C

On the morning of April 18, 2013 just after sunrise are a couple of trains climbing their way through Kingman.

1. BNSF 4019 East,  M-BARBEL1-27A at 0627, approaching the big curve around the town's sports complex.

2. BNSF 4786 East, Z-STOWSP7-27L at 0649, coming through downtown and then on the curve around the sports complex now in full sunlight

Ah, memories of  Kingman. I stayed overnight  there five years ago but did not see much railroad action. I did visit the local museum which was rather interesting.

I wonder why the 2nd main didn't just follow the 1st?  Adding that big curve seems like a lot of work, vs. going parallel to Main 1.

Westbound from Getz, the first siding East of Kingman, there is a short 3% grade down past the Kingman depot.  The higher line is the Eastward track which was built to bypass that 3% grade.

Construction of second mainline (main #2) in the 1920's through Kingman Canyon west of town and past the depot into the curve allowed a decreased grade of the original mainline (1) as originally built. Even today Main #2 is the designated and
prefered routing for eastbound trains even though both mains cane be used in either direction.
