Western Railroad Discussion > Landlocked Covered Hoppers Marina, CADate: 04/12/25 15:43 Landlocked Covered Hoppers Marina, CA Author: gulfstream Had the opportunity to get a close up look at these landlocked covered hoppers at the closed CEMEX Lapis Sand plant in Marina, CA. KCAX 55117 and KCAX 55178 are the reporting marks. The rail mover that was attached to them was recently removed from the site.

Gerry Date: 04/12/25 22:22 Re: Landlocked Covered Hoppers Marina, CA Author: EricSP According to what I found online the KCAX reporting marks were only used from 1985 through 1987. Presumably the cars have been sitting there since about that time.
Date: 04/13/25 12:31 Re: Landlocked Covered Hoppers Marina, CA Author: sd60m Based on the appearance of the springs...looks like they are really compressed to me...I'd guess these hoppers are still loaded.
Do you agree...and...if so, with what...sand??? Thanks for any kind reply. Date: 04/15/25 11:54 Re: Landlocked Covered Hoppers Marina, CA Author: DWDebs/2472 The coil springs on the trucks are fully compressed, or very nearly so. I suspect the cars are not only full, but also (1) the cars are loaded far more than the allowable weight limit, or (2) corrosion has weakened the springs substiantially.
- Doug Debs Date: 04/15/25 16:16 Re: Landlocked Covered Hoppers Marina, CA Author: SP_8299 Now those are a couple of interesting cars. They're ACF 5250cf Center Flow cars, and Neubauer's ACF book show them as a group of 80 cars, built in September 1966, originally for Union Carbide, series CCBX 55105-55184. Ex-CCBX 55117, 55155, 55157, 55161, and 55178, to KCAX, same numbers.
