Western Railroad Discussion > Nebraska TornadoDate: 04/27/25 17:29 Nebraska Tornado Author: bmarti7 Storm chaser John McKinney showed a stopped BNSF coal train west of Hyannis with a large wedge tornado heading toward the train. John had to relocate for safety. Hopefully the crew is OK. Radar image shows the tornado "couplet". The blue line is Hwy2.

Date: 04/27/25 18:10 Re: Nebraska Tornado Author: thatguy It was a large wedge tornado. For those of you who want to see the knocked over unit go to Ryan Scholl's youtube live stream and scroll back until you see 6:25 pm on the bottom of his broadcast.
Date: 04/27/25 19:16 Re: Nebraska Tornado Author: funnelfan That's more than a few cars. Looks like the whole rear half of the empty coal train derailed. Most of the cars toward the middle are rolled toward the highway, then a section of about 12 cars upright but leaning, then the rear several cars and DPU are rolled away from the highway.

Locos don't seem they'd be very easy to tip over. Chuck Date: 04/27/25 23:27 Re: Nebraska Tornado Author: TCnR "Once I got to the train, I felt like I had to stop and make sure if it was the head end to make sure they were OK," Valdez said. "Glad it was the tail end of the train. Once I got to the head end, I saw one of the train crew come out and looked like he was OK."
