The Hills Are Green, It's A Good Time To Visit Ritzville

While it's always a good time to visit Ritzville, May 24 will be an especially good day with a plethora of activities going on.

The hills are still green, as seen in this photo of an eastbound rolling through Ritzville last night.

In addition to seeing in person the approximately 40 trains that roll through daily, our Depot Museum will open for the season on Friday, May 23. We have a nice park with grass and shade next to the depot from which you can watch trains.

We have a pretty cool 1910-built Northern Pacific depot, loaded with railroad stuff, a telegrapher's station in the agent's office, and all kinds of interesting town history.

On Saturday, May 24, the depot will open at 10 a.m., and we'll have a blacksmithing demonstration using a 1901 forge in our outdoor equipment area.

Downtown, there's a car show — Machines on Main — with live music.

It's also opening day at the Dr. Burroughs Home museum on Main Street, where at 12:30 we're hosting a cornhole tournament, and a fund-raising raffle.

Raffle tickets are $1, for the chance of winning an outdoor patio fire table, and other prizes including a wine basket, a custom metal print railroad photo, and a handmade quilt. I think there will also be a vintage radio. Even if you don't win, come enjoy a free, root-beer float at the museum. The Burroughs Home is the former residence of Dr. Frank Burroughs, a physician who practiced here in the earl;y 20th century.

But wait, there's more. The Chamber is hosting an art and food festival in the city park, with all kinds of vendors.

Ritzville is on Interstate 90, about 60 miles southwest of downtown Spokane.

Of course you can always watch trains rolling through on our streaming camera. It's part of the Steel Highway network, and you can find it on YouTube. It's free to watch.

Both the Depot Museum, and the Burroughs Home Museum will be open from noon to 4 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays this summer; or by appointment.

Come experience the legacy which is Ritzville.
