Western Railroad Discussion > The Santa Fe lives ! - sort ofDate: 05/05/25 08:16 The Santa Fe lives ! - sort of Author: gcm 5/4/25
The paint has held up well for ex-Santa Fe GP60 191. Along with ex-Great Northern-ATSF GP39-3 2544, they are in a yard along the old Santa Fe in Sealy,Tx. These engines have been in town for a while now working local businesses in the area. Date: 05/05/25 11:44 Re: The Santa Fe lives ! - sort of Author: Roadmaster I am guessing the "ex-GN" part of 2544's history refers to its time in storage on BNSF (as GN 2572) before rebuilding in Albia - perhaps to clear the BNSF number 2572 for GP39-3 2572, which is former Santa Fe GP38u 2340, originally GP38 3540. BNSF 2544 was originally a Santa Fe locomotive, built as 1372, renumbered 3372, and renumbered to 2872 after being upgraded to a GP35u. BNSF's 1st number for this locomotive was 2572.
Matthew Date: 05/05/25 13:17 Re: The Santa Fe lives ! - sort of Author: gcm Thanks for the detailed info on that unit.
Wow - sometimes the history of some of these engines is complicated. Gary Date: 05/05/25 21:30 Re: The Santa Fe lives ! - sort of Author: wpdude So... Temple sends the worst of the worst to Somerville, who then cull out the 2 worst of those units, and send them to the 191 local in Sealy. We had a few "rats", and sometimes those were actually the coolest units. First question- does it run? If yes, does the AC work? If yes, does it have fuel? If yes...WINNER!
