Fooling Around With Drones at Fulda (Donner Pass)
Author: BoilingMan

I was up at The Balloon Track at Fulda to map it with the drone.  The Balloon is not easy (impossible?) to shoot in it's entirety.   The first photo is the result of the mapping flight- 199 individual photos stitched into 1.  I'm not sure why some parts didn't print..   I suspect the texture of the firs, pines, and cedars somehow confused the stitching software.  I'll give Tech Support a call...

The other photos are some of trains that passed while I was there:  a WB auto racks, a BNSF rights EB, and #6.  There were a few others, but I was busy with the mapping.

(Fulda is on Donner, between Blue Canon and Emigrant Gap)

Great photos from where others have not photographed from, at least the drone shots!
Thanks for trecking into the wilderness to take those!

IC or Boilingman..   I have a question.  Advance approach at the intermediate signal of MP 168.8 tells the engineer what at the next control point.   I don't have a SP timetable for the Roseville Sub to reference, hence why I am asking you guys..

Mark (IC) can certainly give the exact answer, but as a retired RRer (who really only made the coffee), I can tell you that up ahead the double track will go to single at Switch 9 (just beyond Emigrant Gap). Y over Y is the first clue as to what’s in store at Switch 9.

Yellow/Yellow is Approach Diverging - Proceed prepared to advance on diverging route at next signal at prescribed speed through turnout. Your next signal can be one of three, Red/Green, Red/Yellow or Red/Flashing Yellow.

Balloon track is used to turn snow removal trains?

That’s right- mostly the Flangers.
The Balloons (there’s another in Truckee) were added as a result of the City of SF snowbound incident in 1952. They speed up turning the Flangers, eliminating using a wye, which would be difficult to keep clear in a storm.
